Students at STA get opportunities for real world learning embedded within their classrooms, lab workspaces, and even in the field. King Butcher, junior Computer Science student from the Indepedence School District, said, "The skills I'm learning in class involve problem solving, team work, and especially communication because having to coordinate with people on what work needs to get done and how it needs to get done is something I see replicated in the workforce."
"Internships at STA allow us to ctach talent with incredible skill at an early age so we can indoctronate them into how we do things and contribute to the community at the same time," said Troy Prewitt, President of Ultrax Aerospace. Speaking about students from STA, "Their education so far has given them a great number of successes to build on...What we're learning is these young students from MIC and STA are a mile ahead, and we have to accelerate our development because they will outpace our milestone." STA's Engineering and Computer Science students work hard and are transformed from students into career-focused, skills-minded individuals ready for the next chapter.
The Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC) program is preparing to launch a highly sought-after bachelor’s degree combining artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and data science. The Bachelor of Science in Data Science will start in summer 2024, said Stan Elliott, MIC program director, and is offered through the MIC program’s partners – the University of Central Missouri, Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and Metropolitan Community College.
In January 2023, Elliott said he began hearing requests for the new degree from the MIC program’s business partners.
“The business partners were asking if UCM had an AI program and, if so, when would interns be available for the Kansas City region’s workforce as the AI push was growing at a fast pace,” Elliott said. “With the Data Science BS degree program starting in June 2024, interns in the MIC program would be available in June 2025, when they begin their paid, three-year, year-round internship with one of our over 70 MIC business partners.” Click here to read more.
Blake Sullivan, a MIC student, is participating in a paid internship with Lead Bank while attending high school. This will help him to become job ready when he completes his four-year college degree nearly two years earlier than most students his age. For the full story, click here. Senior, Alex Sontoro, is not your typical student and his day reflects it! For half of Alex's school day, he works as an intern at World of Fun. With his rich experiences within the STA Finance and Fintech Capstone Course, Alex was primed to analyze data to optimize systems at WoF. Not only was he prepared with the career-ready skills, but his interpersonal skills shined to all he encountered.
Summit Technology Academy (STA) starts its 25th year in High-Quality Learning. STA offers Capstone experiences for high school juniors and seniors in a variety of high-wage, high demand career areas. "25 years ago, STA was 1 classroom with a focus of building a pipeline for Engineering in the KC Metro area," remembers Director Dr. Jeremy Bonnesen. Students who are passionate, focused, and driven can accelerate their career path at STA.
